A congresswoman from South Florida kicked off an after-school program for some special students in Miami Gardens.U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., teamed up with the Boys and Girls Club of Miami-Dade to open the program for Skyway Elementary School.At a ribbon-cutting ceremony held Wednesday, Wilson expressed her excitement about this new initiative.“Why close the door at 4 o’clock p.m. and say, ‘Go home. It’s the end of the day?'” she said. “Why don’t we keep the schools open that we have invested in at least $1 million in every Dade County public school?”The program is expected to serve more than 100 children with sports, art and various other activities.

(AP) — Four people were wounded Wednesday in a shooting at an Indiana park during a memorial, police said.The shooting occurred around 6:45 p.m. during a balloon release at McCormick Park in Fort Wayne, Officer Anthony Krock told The Journal Gazette.One woman and three men were taken to a hospital. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers advanced a bill Wednesday that would ban abortion once cardiac activity can be detected in an embryo, which is generally around the sixth week of pregnancy and before most women even know they are pregnant. Thirty-three lawmakers voted to end debate on the bill — just enough needed to set up an identical 33-16 vote to advance the bill. If just one other lawmaker had voted not to end debate, the bill would likely have been declared dead for the year. It must survive two more rounds of debate before the end of the 90-day session to pass.The effort to pass the so-called heartbeat bill in the Republican-controlled state remains in question. An amendment floated by a Republican co-signer of the bill that would push the ban out to 12 weeks of pregnancy has yet to be considered.
